From a distance, these are very pretty beads. They are perfectly round and look similar to real pearls. I think that people need to be aware of what they're buying here. I did the same thing that the other buyer did; I cracked one open because they had this weird clear nail polish like coating on them. On the inside could be shell--it has a chalky shell-like look and texture. So what you're getting is a plain old shell that's been round shaped, dyed, and then obviously coated in something metallic and then clear. These are NOT made from the pearly inside of an oyster or mollusk shell, no way. Many manufacturers and web sites lead you to believe the shell itself has the luster of a pearl. No. These are not even close to being that. The obvious plastic coating on the outside is what makes these so fake looking. I thought I had found something special, and they're not at all.

Dear Sherri,
Shell pearls are made of big sea shells which lay on the bottom of sea bed. The internal shell itself does not have pearl luster. That is why manufacturers coat the shell to create pearl effect.
This black shell pearls you bought are called glossy rainbow shell pearls. They have metallic luster, which makes them look unreal. You may consider non glossy rainbow shell pearls, which have natural color and similar look as real pearls, and the cost is lower.
Thank you,
The YouPearl Team
